BRYAN & ERIN KERR

Each flitch, each board, each plank can only have one ideal use. The woodworker, applying a thousand skills, must find that ideal use and then shape the wood to realize its true potential.
George Nakashima

Bryan Kerr’s desire to build well-crafted furniture initially began as a young person when exposed to the work of the renowned George Nakashima in New Hope Pennsylvania. With an intense drive to connect the natural world into his pieces, Bryan focuses on material and wood grain to drive the design of his work. This natural aesthetic is then complemented by clean lines, modern functionality, and an elegance of the physical structure.

Founded in 2021, KERR Woodworking creates handmade furniture and home goods in the beautiful mountains of Asheville, NC. Located in the River Arts District within the co-op wood shop, Foundation Woodworks, Bryan and Erin Kerr are in a great location to lean into and contribute to the local maker community. With a focused mission to stay small and create intentional pieces for the conscious consumer, everything is handmade by Bryan, whose work is truly heirloom quality.

Hailing from a small farm town in New Jersey, Bryan started as a white-glove mover for an Antique Dealer just outside of Philadelphia. After a completed degree in Journalism and Creative Writing at Virginia Tech, he moved to Seattle where he began learning how to build furniture. With two decades of experience at notable companies such as Chadhaus and Henrybuilt, Bryan has refined his skills to provide extreme precision and excellence.

KERR Woodworking’s mission not only pertains to creating beautiful wood furniture but to incorporate a high caliber client experience as well. To accomplish this, Bryan partnered with wife Erin Kerr, an experienced project manager and hospitality expert with a love for art and design, to build a unique furniture company with a customer service backbone maintaining a seamless and enjoyable client experience from start to finish. Bryan and Erin collaborate on each project working closely on design, client communication, and methods of mindful production.

As a team, KERR is delighted to bring each project’s specific design needs to life, while creating a timeless piece enhancing the client’s spatial relationship within their home for a lifetime.

Patina

The effect of everyday life. The aging process of a well-loved piece of furniture. These are the moments when each piece creates its story that enhances its quality and makes it truly unique. The odd scratch or dent, marking a time in its journey within a home, a family, a space makes each piece special. Lived-in and well-loved is the ultimate function of a great table, chair, cupboard. The aging process (oxidation) of wood can show soft color changes or become worn in places indicating its use and purpose. This is patina. And, it’s something that can’t be made by anyone else but the one who appreciates and uses the piece everyday.

Materials

Variations in tone and grain is present in both solid and plywood. No two boards are exactly the same and we embrace the unique characteristics in the wood grain. Bryan possesses a keen ability to match grain and color tones for the most ideal finished product. We are always able to produce samples should a client request them. The descriptions and images below are to better communicate the general look of each wood species.

Ash

Light in color with variation of grain pattern, this hardwood is a durable and lovely material. Boards with woven veins of caramel colored heart wood creates a stronger visual connection to its natural beauty and to the tree in which it came.

cherry

Light in color, Cherry ages to a rich reddish brown. This economical domestic wood possesses a similar grain pattern to Maple but showcases a warm richness.

Maple

With a light creamy color and smooth grain pattern of soft floating cathedrals this durable material is both beautiful and impressive.

Oak

A light beige through brown, this is an elegant material. Known for its grand cathedral grain patterns, flat sawn white oak is a timeless and charming option. Quarter-Sawn and Rift Cut White Oak are also available upon request.

Sapele

A perfect choice for outdoor furniture, this beautiful material from the Mahogany family can stand up against the elements. Its stunning reddish-brown tone tends to darken with age while  its mottled grain showcases a lustrous iridescence.

Walnut

Medium brown to dark chocolate in color, Walnut is a rich and lustrous wood. With stunning grain of flowing cathedral patterns, Walnut ages with an undeniable beauty and warmth.

Finishes

OSMO POLYX OIL

Osmo PolyX Oil is a vegetable-based wax matte finish to protect and enhance the beauty of the wood. This hand-rubbed natural finish is our finish of choice as it allows the wood to “breathe” (the movement of moisture in and out of the wood depending on seasonal humidity fluctuations). Osmo also allows for life’s unforeseen moments when a scratch or dent may occur. This finish, as opposed to a varnish finish, can easily be spot sanded and reapplied, returning to its original condition and contains zero VOC’s or chemical off-gassing.

WALRUS OIL

Walrus Cutting Board Oil is an all natural food-grade finish. Made from beeswax, coconut oil, pure mineral oil, and vitamin E, Walrus Oil is 100% food safe and plant derived. This finish is used on all KERR cutting boards.

“We worked with the amazing Kerr team to design and build custom tables for our shop. Working with them was one of the highlights of preparing to open our store. They were natural and easy collaborators. While we had a vision for the design of the tables, they were able to help me tweak the design and materials to make sure that we got everything we needed within our budget. They also made it happen not just on time for the construction project but ahead of schedule. I am so grateful for their collaboration, professionalism and beautiful craftsmanship. I hope to have other projects in the future on which to work with them.”
